MND Upskill: Living and working with MND - Illawarra

This unique workshop brings together people living with MND and their carers alongside health and community care professionals for a shared learning experience.

Together we’ll explore the complex nature of MND, and you will learn about what MND is, symptoms and symptom management strategies. The afternoon will showcase a range of equipment from the FlexEquip equipment library, including practical demonstrations of various communication devices – voice amplifier, iPad and communication apps, EyeGaze and more.   

 

Workshop outcomes

By completing the course attendees will have the knowledge and skills to:

  • Describe the disease, its variants, potential causes, genetic implications, pathology and treatment options
  • Identify MND symptoms and to anticipate, prepare and respond to changes
  • Identify the health and community care professionals involved in different aspects of care
  • Make informed choices about clinical trials and research, and understand the access pathways
  • Use a range of assistive technology and communication software, and to know where and how to get equipment
  • Undertake self-directed learning by further researching the resources and tools provided

This session is suitable for health and community care professionals from all disciplines, including allied health professionals, care coordinators and paid support workers. All professionals regardless of your level of experience working with people living with MND are encouraged to register.

Certificate of attendance

Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance after the session, along with a selection of resources. 

Registration and cost

Registration is essential:

  • Free ticket for people living with MND and their informal support network (family and friends)
  • $35 per person for health and community care professionals

Light refreshments will be provided. Places are limited – early registration recommended.

If you have previously attended a MND Upskill workshop delivered by MND NSW, there is no need to attend this session as the core content will be similar.

As this is a catered event, refunds are available up to 2 weeks before the event. After this time, registrations can be transferred to another person. As places are limited, we kindly ask that you register only if you expect to be able to attend.

About the workshop facilitator

Dr Sadaf Warraich, Education Coordinator, MND NSW

Dr Sadaf Warraich holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the University of Sydney. Her research in the field of MND focused on investigating the molecular, cellular, and biochemical basis of MND. Dr Warraich also worked as a Post-doctoral fellow in MND research at Macquarie University. Beyond her research endeavours, Dr Warraich has held teaching positions in various education settings.
